So, what is CAD?
At its core, Computer-Aided Design (CAD) is the use of computers to help create, modify, analyze, or optimize a design. CAD has revolutionized the way we design, from creating entire cars to drawing up blueprints for giant skyscrapers. This incredible tool is in use in industries as diverse as automotive, architecture, product design, fashion, and aerospace, to name but a few.
How does CAD design work?
Let's take a closer look at how CAD works using the automotive industry as an example.
In the early stages of automotive design, designers create a concept for a new car, often starting with sketches and drawings. Once the concept has been finalized, it's time for the CAD software to come into play.
Using CAD software, designers transform their 2D drawings into a 3D model. From the shape of the headlights to the structure of the car's interior, the software allows them to add minute details to the design. The beauty of CAD design is the ability to view the model from any angle and make any necessary adjustments in real-time. But the benefits of CAD don't stop there. Once the 3D model is complete, the CAD software can also be used to run various simulations to predict how the car will perform in a variety of conditions. For example, it can simulate the aerodynamic performance of the designed car, allowing engineers to optimize it to reduce fuel consumption.

Why is CAD important?
